KLUANG: Several new features will be added into the existing MyKad to address the security issues.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the National Registration Department (JPN) would issue the MyKads with the new features to its applicants beginning January.
“The new MyKad has several security features such as laser technology to imprint the applicant's information and photograph onto the card itself. The SIRIM tested and approved chip on the MyKad is also damage proof,” he said after launching the new identity cards at JPN Kluang branch office here Saturday.
“The new security features would also help to detect fake MyKads as well,” he said.
He said the new identity cards would be made from the polycarbonate, which are more durable than the previous one.
He said priority would be given to first-time applicants and those who have damaged MyKads.
Hishammuddin said the new MyKads could be ready within a day.
But for now, only JPN offices in Malacca, Kuching, and Kluang would process the new MyKads.
“If the ministry receives good response, we would implement it nationwide in stages,” he said.
