KUALA LUMPUR: The police’s year-over-year National Key Results Area (NKRA) performance in crime reduction has shown encouraging results to date.
Speaking at the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Open Day and Crime Awareness Day at Dataran Merdeka recently, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said based on the latest statistics, the index crime rate has lowered to 16.4 percent while the street crime rate went down to 45 percent between January and September this year when compared with the same period in 2009.
He commended the police for achieving the results within a short period of time.
While the police initiatives are moving in the right direction, Muhyiddin said the men in blue still require the cooperation of the community to effectively keep crime at bay. He urged the police to rotate officers on duty in community policing efforts to develop better soft skills through interaction with the public.
Muhyiddin said the police should allow more of their personnel to perform duties as “peace officers” instead of merely law enforcers in order to improve ties with the community.
He said a strong relationship with community members is the foundation of a smart partnership that could assist them in identifying crime while implementing the best methods to handle it.
