KUALA LUMPUR: Siblings who might flinch at the thought of performing in the same production would do well to learn from Tan Soo Suan, In Perfect Harmony's vocal coach and principal singer, and her younger sister 28-year-old Soo Tze.
The two appear together in a few numbers in the musical, which is being staged at KLPac in conjunction with The Star's 40th anniversary.
Soo Suan and Soo Tze's inclination for music came from their parents
“There was always music in the house. I sang and danced as a three-year-old and played the piano when I was five.
“Eventually, my primary school headmaster recognised my talent and arranged for a reputable music teacher to help me,” said Soo Suan, who has been working in the performing arts industry for the past 10 years.
In June, Soo Tze resigned from her full-time job in a logistics company to pursue a career in music.
Now that both are in the industry full-time, they can relate to and understand each other better.
“I didn't understand the challenges of a nine-to-five job before while she couldn't understand my frustrations as a vocal coach,” explained Soo Suan.
Soo Tze said that during Dama Orchestra's Butterfly Lovers in 2006, her appreciation for her big sister's work solidified.
“Working with her now is stressful because she is a veteran', but that challenges me to outdo myself,” said the mild-mannered Soo Tze, who is the perfect foil for her big sister's more outgoing, forceful personality.
In Perfect Harmony is their fifth involvement with Dama Orchestra and the sisters are very careful about being professional on the set.
There is no room for preferential treatment, Soo Suan said firmly, and everyone is treated equally.
For now, the younger Tan sister is eager to show her parents that she has made the right choice.
“It's understandable that my folks are apprehensive about my decision. But I'm willing to learn and go all-out to do well as a performing artiste,” said Soo Tze.
In Perfect Harmony A Malaysian Musical Journey is presented by The Star in collaboration with Dama Orchestra, with SP Setia Bhd Group as the gold sponsor and UOB the official bank.
The show will run until Oct 23 at Pentas 1, KLPac.
Tickets for Oct 19 and 23 evening shows are still available. Contact the KLPac box office at 03-4047 9000 or call 03-7967 1388 (ext 1432/1240) for bulk or corporate bookings
