MARAN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be chasing motorcyclists who break traffic rules and other laws to reduce the number of road deaths from next month.
“Statistics show 62% of those killed in road accidents are motorcyclists and pillion riders.
“The Cabinet views this matter seriously and the Transport Ministry has directed the department to take action immediately,” JPJ deputy director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad said yesterday.
He had earlier presented probationary motorcycle licences to 448 senior citizens and orang asli settlers under the department’s One Community, One RTD programme at Kampung Kuala Sentul, near here.
He said all state JPJ directors had been ordered to make sure motorcyclists adhere to specifications set by the department.
Following amendments to the Road Transport Act, the JPJ has the power to inspect vehicles on any road.
“All roads are now under the JPJ’s jurisdiction, including private ones, parking lots and those in plantations, housing areas and villages,” he said, adding that it could set up roadblocks in these areas.
On the community programme, Ismail said many rural folk did not have a valid licence even after years of riding motorcycles.
“We will assist them in getting their licence so they will be eligible for insurance,” he said.
Also present were Pahang JPJ director Datuk Zakaria Man and Kuala Sentul assemblyman Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin.
