GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have identified several locations believed to be "hotspots" for gambling activities in the state.Penang police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said operations were being carried out with the Bukit Aman police to eliminate the problem. "The main focus is the hot locations in the districts of Timur Laut, Barat Daya and Seberang Jaya Tengah," he said at a media conference here Sunday.
He said that between January and August this year, state police had conducted 1,1718 raids, from 641 raids during the corresponding period, and arrested 631 people.
In raids conducted last year, the police arrested 271 people, he added.
He said a total of 6,416 computers sets had been seized this year, from 1,972 sets last year.
In a related development, Ayub said the police had identified the mastermind responsible for conducting gambling activities at a hut at Kampung Batak, Relau, near here.
"We are now tracing his whereabouts," he added.
In an operation conducted last Sept 23, 79 people, including 22 women, were arrested when police raided the place. - Bernama
