NILAI: The Customs Department foiled two separate attempts to smuggle in illicit drugs worth some RM2.8mil at the low-cost container terminal (LCCT) and KL International Airport (KLIA).
During the bust at LCCT on Thursday, three friends were arrested for carrying 30kg of ketamine. They had arrived from Jakarta, said Customs assistant director Liah Omar.
“When we opened their bags, there were several packets containing cereals.
“After opening the packets, we found the ketamine hidden in them,” he said, adding that the three suspects included a woman.
Liah said the suspects aged between 30 and 40 years had been remanded for a week to assist in the probe.
Records showed that the male suspects had travelled regularly to Jakarta, while the woman was on her maiden trip.
One of the male suspects is a bouncer at a pub in Kuala Lumpur while the woman is a sales promoter.
Several hours later, Customs officials seized 50,000 Ecstasy pills which had been declared as green tea at KLIA’s cargo section.
Liah said the consignment was sent from Hong Kong via a courier.
“Since such consignments need to be approved by health officials, the green tea box was handed over to them for inspection.
“It was then that the pills were found concealed inside the green tea packs,” he said.
Customs is checking if the recipient company exists.
“Syndicates have been trying to smuggle in illicit drugs via courier service as we have tightened inspection at the country’s entry points.”
Both cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
