PETALING JAYA: An early morning fire, said to have been caused by a short circuit, damaged nine Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) of theUnited Overseas Bank in Jalan Tengah here. Scores of people were unable to conduct their transactions following the 6.05am fire.
Security guard Mohd Mustafa, 50, said he was doing the night shift when he smelt something burning.
“I saw smoke coming out through the advertisement board above the ATMs.
“The fire spread so quickly and by the time I called the Fire and Rescue Services Department the heat was too intense for me to douse it,” he said.
A department spokesman said they received the distress call at 6.03am and arrived at the scene at 6.08am.
“We managed to put out the fire within 10 minutes,” he said.
The spokesman said the fire was likely caused by a short circuit and initial investigations had ruled out arson or any element of foul play.
Two cash dispensing, four cheque deposit and three cash deposit machines sustained external damage but the contents are said to be safe.
Police have obtained the CCTV recordings from the bank to assist investigations.
Meanwhile UOB has issued a notification on their website on the interruption of service.
It said the branch would be closed until next week pending repairs.
