GEORGE TOWN: A thief who assaulted and robbed a woman went on his knees to beg for forgiveness after he was caught in a citizen’s arrest.
The crying 29-year-old victim shouted at him, asking: “Why did you assault a woman?”
Police, who arrived a few minutes later, took the suspect away.
The man, in his 30s, had apparently tailed the woman to her car parked on Brown Road here at about 1.30am yesterday.
When she entered the car, the man pulled the terrified victim out as she clung onto her handbag and mobile phone.
The man grabbed the phone and hit her on the neck.
When she refused to let go of her handbag, he dragged her for about 1m as she cried out for help.
Passers-by, who heard her screams, came to her aid and nabbed the suspect who subsequently knelt in front of the victim to seek forgiveness.
OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the suspect had 10 previous criminal and drug-related records.
In an unrelated case, a Thai national was found dead in his rented room at a five-storey flat on Macallum Street here.
The victim, known only as Mahasa, 33, was found hanged by the neck with the rope tied to a window grille.
His body was discovered by his roommate at 12.10pm yesterday.
Apparently, the deceased, who operated a food stall in the area, was upset over a broken relationship.
