JOHOR BARU: Staff from Zon Hotel here created a unique three-dimensional kolam with a peacock centrepiece for Deepavali.
Head of the creative team Mahudin Musliman, 43, said his team gained inspiration after studying hundreds of motifs and researching its significance to the Festival of Lights.
“We decided to go with a circular kolam featuring paisley-inspired designs as it is supposed to signify happiness and a bright future.
“We also wanted to add the wow factor to the kolam with the 3D dimensional peacock in the centre sporting actual peacock feathers,” he said.
Mahudin said the most challenging part of completing the intricate project was colouring the 150kg of crushed rice used for the kolam, which took days to dye.
“The rainy weather also did not help and we took about two weeks to complete the whole kolam,” he said, adding that the 5.5m creation was placed at the lounge area of the hotel for guests to admire.
Mahudin said another challenge that the design team faced was creating the centrepiece which mirrored a life-sized peacock with its tail fanned out.
“We used about 150 feathers,” he said, adding that the peacock was chosen as it is synonymous with Deepavali decorations.
He said the hotel’s kolam truly portrayed the vibrant and festive mood of the occasion.
