KUCHING: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry aims to construct 5,691 houses for the poor through the Housing Assistance Programme and restore 3,456 dilapidated houses belonging to the poor nationwide by the end of the year.
In 2010, the project involved 16,926 houses, which consisted of 6,204 newly constructed houses and restoration works to 10,722 houses.
He said he is confident to meet the target for construction and restoration of the 9,147 houses by the year-end. Shafie said of the 5,691 houses to be constructed, 2,203 units would be built in Sabah, 2,029 in Sarawak while 1,459 would be in the peninsula.
As for the restoration of 3,456 houses, he said 479 houses would be in Sabah, 1,982 in Sarawak and 1,195 in the peninsula.
